“To believe in yourself and to follow your dreams, to have goals in life and a drive to succeed, and to surround yourself with the things and the people that make you happy – this is success!” – Sasha Azevedo

On the fourth day of the New Year I want to wish all of you a wonderful, blessed and exciting new year!

On my previous two long distance tours with the KLR my first port of call in Germany was in Möhringen. Anne and Archie Rebstock are old friends of many tours in Southern Africa. We now had the privilege of spending New Year with them. But something was missing. My KLR. On my previous two visits I arrived there on the trusty old KLR.

At the moment I am busy with a huge struggle. It is decision time. My head tells me to complete what I couldn’t do during the 2008 trip: Russia, Siberia and Mongolia. My heart tells me there is no continent more wonderful, more fascinating and more testing to travel through than Africa. I miss the Nubian desert, the Sudanese people. And I’ve got South African friends that would love to join me on a ride to the pyramids of Giza.

Adding to the conflicting arguments is the cost of getting the KLR back to South Africa after riding through Russia / Siberia. Ulan Bataar is really on the other side of the world. One possibility that crossed my mind is to leave the KLR behind in Mongolia after completing the trip. But is it fair to this trusty travelling companion that carried me through many a desert? Must I perhaps try to find a sponsor to assist in bringing back the bike? Is there really anything to gain for an advertiser to say his company aided in bringing back a KLR with far more than 100 000 km on the clock to SA?

As in the past I would love to hear what you think. Write me your comments. Let us start brain storming to get all those brilliant ideas together of which I am not capable

Have a look again at the quote with which I started this post. I was privileged to spend quality time with real adventurers like Jolandie Rust. A quote of her that I loved: Even if I have to crawl then I will crawl, but I am going around Africa!

Let us start crawling for all our different dreams!

Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, whether you believe or not, I wish you all from my heart a merry and blessed Christmas Day. May Love and Peace fill you and may it be the fuel in your drive to make this world a better place.

The reaction on my previous post was overwhelming. I took off my hat especially to all those gents who sent emails and wrote: I cried / I am still wiping off the tears / I battled to keep back the tears. I think Kate was meant especially for us gents, because we are so masters in destroying. Ask me, I keep on doing it.

Do you remember the post of 6 September about Ronnie, the guy travelling around the world and who met his soul partner in Bali? I received an email from him last night. He arrived safely in Auckland, New Zealand. He sent me two photographs, which I really enjoyed, Here they are:

That was then ...

This is now ..!!

Quote from his email: ” … where Patricia Spahn burst into my life and my heart like an exploding comet, triggering changes in me that I never thought were possible, and altering forever my perceptions on how life could and should be lived…

Christmas came six months early for me this year…!!”

I wish Ronnie and Patricia thousands of happy sunsets together.

Gaan kyk op my webblad www.naboom2germany.co.za oor my ryplanne na Mongolië.

Ek groet.

Baie keer bly so iets by `n mens spook. Dit spook nie meer by my nie. As jy sou belangstel, gaan ek dit nou vir jou as Kersgeskenk gee.

Laat weet my as jy dit gelees het.

I feel excited. As I have many German friends following the blog I am going to share with you in English.

There are many indicators pointing to a very exciting year 2012. One is that most probably I will hit the road again end of May, beginning of June. My destination? Wait and see. That will be the realisation of a life-long dream.

The KLR is doing fine, will have more than 83 000 km on the clock after the weekend. This weekend will be again one of far riding, clocking up km’s, touching up riding skills in … mud. Anne, do you remember our muddy trip a few years ago? That is where we are heading. Hope to have good photographs after the weekend.

It does not happen often that I make an error in my “judgement” (wrong word, I know) of people. Recently it did happen and I had to apologize.

In South Africa there is a lady, Jolandie Rust, who excelled in long distance cycling. Among many achievements was her solo ride around South Africa. During April 2011 she left South Africa on her bicycle to circumnavigate Africa, alone. In northern Angola she was attacked by four panga-yielding men and robbed of everything. She had to return to South Africa. That didn’t deter her. She decided to try it again, this time on a motorbike. That is how we got to know each other. She selected a KLR (it was really her own choice) and started her riding practices.

She made an appointment to come to Naboom, and I wasn’t in the mood for her. I don’t like glamour poopsies with a bit of air around them. Quite moerig (German people, it means bei schlechter Laune) I awaited her arrival here in the bushveld. Of course she wasn’t on time, and as I sent her an sms telling her I am leaving, I received a call from here. The KLR had broken down on the N1!

Good friends Willie and Cathy Beukes came to her rescue with a trailer and cold water.

And that is where I had to take back every word I said and thought about her. She is a very, very gutsy lady, humble, and I was so wrong.

When she crashed my KLR last weekend I didn’t even kill her. I learnt that one must never point at bluewildbeest while riding in sand. The logic result would be a crash.

Look at all the pieces of mirror in the foreground.

Jolandie, go girl go! You can make it around Africa! Her website: www.jolandie-rust.blogspot.com/

If you have DSTV please make a mental note of the following documentary about a special rhino. I received the following from Selomie Maritz, our rhino lady of South Africa:

Dear Friends

I’m thrilled to announce that the debut screenings of ‘Saving Rhino Phila’ will be aired on eNews, channel 403, on Saturday 3 Dec @09h00, Sunday 4 Dec @15h00 and Monday 5 Dec @15h00.

We all worked really hard to make this into a really intriguing documentary that would enlighten a global audience to the plight of our beleaguered rhino population, and we’re very proud of our end result. This is only the first step – the film is intended for international broadcast as soon as possible.

To view the trailer for the film please go to www.youtube.com/nhuafricachannel

I would like to take the opportunity to thank each and everybody for the support I had with the rhinos during the last 18 months which was extremely difficult at times. At time you kept me going when I wanted to throw in the towel.

A special thank you to Andre Snyman who were there for Phila and me 3 hours after the last shot was fired at Phila. When I didn’t know which direction or where to go he was there day or night to listen to my plea for Phila.

www.eblockwatch.co.za

Niel my husband and family thank you for your patience and support. I know it was very hard for them as they did not always know where I was or what I am doing.

Phila I have learned so much from you girl and you were the beginning for hope to many rhinos.

Regards

Selomie

I wish you a wonderful weekend!

Lodie

Yesterday my heart was touched by a young rhino bull with the name Jomo.

Jomo’s family was butchered by poachers a few months ago. His little brother was found, stuck in trees, dead.

Selomie Maritz, an activist against rhino poaching, discovered that Jomo was to be auctioned. One of the potential buyers was a man arrested for rhino poaching …

With the help of a foreigner Selomie rescued and bought Jomo. Two weeks ago Jomo was delivered to the wilderness area where Selomie is busy creating a sanctuary for rhinos. Jomo was kept in a boma to get accustomed to his new environment. The last few nights in the boma Jomo made crying sounds. Selomie pitched her small tent next to the boma and slept there so that she could speak to him when he was in distress.

On Sunday I got a message from Selomie: Jomo was to be let out from the boma. I followed her invitation to see this young bull released back into the wild.

While riding there I had enought time to think. Both the KLR and a rhino are ugly beasts. Both are pre-historic. Both managed to survive the pressure from an environment expecting more and more. Until now. Now the KLR has a better chance to survive, even with its out-dated brakes and carburettor engine.

After a long struggle to get Jomo out of the boma I realised what human beings were doing to these animals. We kill and butcher and maim these animal for a horn. A traumatised Jomo slowly walked closer to the other rhinos, and they accepted him. The next morning he still was with the other rhinos.

I want to use my KLR to create a bigger awareness that rhinos need our help. How? I still do not know. Now I need the creative energy from people like Emil. I want to design a sticker for KLR riders that want to support the campaign. How can one use KLR in such a sticker? The K could be killing, the R rhinos.

Let’s see with what we can come up. Let the one beast help the other one.

It’s better to have Journeyed than to Arrive.

Skitterend!

Ons was seker so 11uur in Livingstone en sommer dadelik tent opgeslaan by Waterfront en gou klere uitgespoel. Ons was druipnat.

More ry ons Monze toe en slaap by The Moorings kamp.

Slaap wel en seenwense.

Philip en Marietjie

5 Oktober:

Groete

9 Oktober:

Groete Van Niekerks

13 Oktober:

Hallo Lodie.

Dis nou eerder ‘n myners kampong.

Groete

Dankie Baboos!
